The shelter that some of us have been waiting a few years to see hit production has just been launched!
The team at Locus Gear, just a matter of a few minutes ago (around 10 pm, PST, GMT-8), updated their website to debut the Djedi DCF-eVent Dome 2 person shelter!
Weight:
They are releasing it in two versions, with and without a front mesh inner door.
The version with the front mesh panel is:
Body 680g
Carbon fiber poles 300g
Total weight: 980g / 34.5 ounces / 2.16 pounds / 0.154 stone
The version without the front mesh panel is:
Body: 580g
Carbon fiber poles 300g
Total weight: 880g / 31 ounces / 1.94 pounds / 0.138 stone
Price:
The price for the version without the mesh door is 126,000 yen, which is currently $1,136 or 926 euro.
The price for the version with the mesh door is 126,000 yen, which is currently $1,280 or 1043 euro.
Fabric:
The body of the shelter is made with DCF-eVent fabric and the bathtub is made with some DCF-TPU fabric.
The specs on this thing are just amazing.

Moisture permeability:50,000 g/m2-24hrs (JIS L 1099 B1)
Looks great, however, for weight and price, I am sticking with Zpacks Duplex
Hey Rob.
Well, two totally different shelters with two massively different Purpose of Use.
Not even sure it is fair to compare the two.
But, I understand the point you are making.
It’s still a floored, single-wall 2-person shelter so what do you consider it’s “massively different” use that a Duplex couldn’t cover (with or without flex poles)? It looks like usable space is smaller, but you didn’t provide footprint dimensions.
Hey Michael, Two completely different shelters. The Duplex is a run of the mill 3 season shelter great for most places. This Djedi from Locus Gear is a 4-season alpine shelter. Two totally different POU’s.
My zpacks Duplex still has lots of life in it. Little mods as I go along help. What will be interesting to see is how Joe will evolve the Duo over time. I would like to see zippers on the doors to eliminate flapping for example plus a more robust carbon pole configuration. When I use both my hiking poles and the carbon poles it is like a rock in the wind. This new tent from Locus is much like an MSR or Force I dine in eVent. Other than material and pole weight I see the mainstream and cottege vendors as coming closer together. Thanks for the update.
Hello Dara, I have yet to give one of those zpacks ‘flex’ systems a try. If I ever get a SolPlex (the one shelter that I want these days) I want to get it with the flex poles. I agree with you that it is about time that zpacks invest some r&d into an updated shelter of some kind, their shelter lineup is getting stagnant. This new Djedi is a hard-core japan, alaska, and a few other places around the world, kind of shelter. And yeah, other than the fabric, this is pretty much identical to a few other other 4-season alpine shelters already on the market from the big boys. Thanks for the comment!
I guess I should have mentioned it in the OP… the POU of this shelter is that it is a 4-season + alpine design.
The design of it is all about shedding snow above the treeline, and to minimize the number of stakes needed to fit into narrow ridges.
Thanks, John,
This helps us newbies and non-mountaineers, high altitude snow climbers, etc. understand the product and its market positioning better.
Might you elaborate on distinguishing between a shelter and a tent please?
Giles
Hey Giles,
Uhh, in regards to something being a ‘fully enclosed’ thingie that you sleep in… I am not sure there is a difference, at least not in the most generalized sense of the term here in America. Perhaps (utterly unknown to me) there is a difference in those two terms in other countries, that I am just unaware of.
It has always been my experience that 4-Season tents are, in actuality, 1-season tents that season being winter. For that reason (and the extreme price point) I’m out! I’ll stick with my Skyscape X which has worked extremely well for my three season use.
lol, a great way to look at it Jim. So true.
And, +1 on the SMDSX. Wish I had one of those double door internal pole versions!
I’ve been wondering why no one made a cuban fiber version of the Black Diamond Firstlight. The wondering is over. This is worthy of consideration as would be the Crux 1 Assault.
