  1. I still use my Zpacks rain jacket and it has proven itself superb in the toughest all day rain. I do not have the pants though. Thanks for all your help John.

  2. John,

I’m curious what your thoughts are regarding this fabric compared to the new Vertice fabric? I own a set of this 3rd gen white fabric but have been considering “upgrading” to the newer version. As someone who owns both, would you consider this a worthy upgrade?

    Also, Glws. :)

    • Hey Ralph, thanks for stopping by and asking that question.

Yeah, these are also the third gen, and the last gen IIRC, of the white fabric.

How would I compare this stuff to the Vertice?

Well, Zpacks has claimed that the fabric manufacturer has claimed that this Vertice fabric has a 60,000 g/m2/24hrs — reference my initial article on the Vertice jacket – but I think most of us are calling BS on that. The Toray Dermizax NX, long considered the market dominator, is 40,000 g/m2/24hrs. So until whoever is making that Vertice jacket is willing to release an official JISS L 1099 result, I am just going to hold onto the fact that I find that claim hard to believe.

That said, I did use the Vertice in a couple of very intense rain storms, including the video at the bottom of my article on the jacket, and all I can say is that it performed significantly better than I expected. It blows away the older Challenger fabric, which I was never a fan off after using it a bit.

I do think this older white fabric still beats the Vertice in regards to MVTR/RET/Breathability. But, it is safe to say that the new Vertice (and last gen Challenger) is going to be significantly more durable fabric.

But personally, I will take performance and weight over durability.

Would I recommend an upgrade from the white fabric garments to the Vertice? Well, first I would hope you would buy this set, so you could have a backup if you ever need one :-D

But if you were not wanting to buy these, and still wanting something else, I would say either the Zpacks Vertice or the KUIU Ultra NX, which I have long been a proponent of, and which I hope to buy here soon. (so somebody needs to buy these zpacks ones, dang it!!, giggle)
